Organic Cosmetics

Going green seems to be the trend these days with many types of organic products becoming readily available for everyone to buy – food, clothes, tea, vitamins and herbal supplements to name a few. It is no surprise that Mother Nature, with the help of scientists has managed to enter to the beauty industry in the form of natural and organic cosmetics.
So what exactly are natural and organic cosmetics? Natural beauty products are made from all sorts of ingredients found in nature such as fruits, plant extracts, seeds, minerals, natural oils and waxes. Shades of lipstick, eye shadow and blush are made by crushing coloured minerals. Shea butter, honey and avocados are used to make lotions and scrubs. Soaps are made of plant oils such as palm and coconut.
Products are termed ‘organic’ if their ingredients are grown without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides or herbicides. These harmful chemicals tend to leave harmful residues on plants which pollute the environment and can have detrimental effects for humans. Thus, organic beauty products are safer and healthier alternatives.
Traditional cosmetics contain synthetic fragrances, dyes, chemicals or preservatives that can trigger severe responses in your skin, leading to skin irritations, rashes or allergic reactions. So, if you have sensitive skin, you might want to consider switching to an organic alternate, as natural cosmetics do not contain harsh foreign substances. Also, natural organic products have been shown to prevent signs of premature ageing by restoring moisture balances and smoothing fine lines.
Due to the beneficial effects of these natural products, many companies try to capitalize on marketing their goods as ‘organic’. Independent organizations have to certify that the products are genuinely free of harmful chemicals. So, when you wish to buy an organic product make sure that you are buying the ‘real’ thing. Search for a ‘certified organic’ proof seal on your product. Also, try and read the label – if the main ingredients of the product (usually listed on top) are difficult-chemical-looking names, then it’s probably not natural / organic. If you still are in doubt, research the ingredients and find out more about the manufacturer to see if they are reliable and can vouch for their products. Although organic products tend to be more expensive than conventional products, you can be sure that you are buying healthy products benefiting yourself and the environment!

qubani ka meetha

Qubani, in Urdu language means Apricot in English. For this particular meetha, only dried apricots are used along with their seeds. The seeds contain kernels inside. The dried apricots are rehydrated in a sugary syrup into a thick compote. I prefer Kashmiri or Afghanistani dried apricots with their seeds to prepare this dessert as I find the dried apricots from Kashmir or Afghanistan very delicious and sweeter in comparision to others.
Dried apricots are high in fibre and proteins. I usually stock up my pantry with a few extra packets of dried apricots as they keep very well in room remperatures

The amount of sugar you use in the preperation of this dessert depends on the sweeteness of the kind of dried apricots you are using. Be careful before you add sugar, use it according to your tastes.
Qubani Ka Meetha – Apricot Compote
Ingredients:
Dried Apricots/Qubani – 400gms (preferably dried naturally)
Saffron threads – a pinch (optional)
Sugar – 300 gms
Thick cream/Custard/Vanilla Ice-cream for serving
Method:
Wash and soak the dried apricots overnight in a deep bowl with surplus water so that the water covers them by about 2 inches. The next day, slit the sides of the swelled up apricots to remove their seeds and keep them aside in a cup. Put the slit apricots into a large non-reactive saucepan with the soaking liquid. Add sugar and cover the lid. Let it cook on medium heat for about 20-30 minutes or until the apricots are very soft. Add more hot boiling water if needed. Once the done, let it cool down. (You can even pressure cook for speedy cooking)
Meanwhile, crack open the apricots kernels using a nut cracker and soak the badam or nuts in a cup of water to loosen their skin.
Once the apricots are cool, pour half of it into a blender container and blend till pureed.
Pour the pureed apricots and the other half of the cooked apricots back into the saucepan and let it cook until it has become thick and pasty in consistency. Taste check for sugar. Add more if you need.
Remove the skin of the soaking apricot nuts or badam. This should be pretty easy as they have been soaking.
Garnish with the badam/nuts and the saffron threads and serve it chilled topped with fresh thick cream, custard or a generous dollop of (Amul) Vanilla ice cream

hyderabadi biryani

There are two traditional methods of preparing the Hyderabadi BiryaniKachchi Yakhnni biryani is prepared with raw meat, which is marinated in yoghurt and then cooked along with the rice by sealing the handi (vessel) with a layer of dough, and is cooked on dum - steaming over coals. This is a challenging process as it requires meticulous attention to time and temperature to avoid over- or under-cooking the meat.In Pakki biryani, the meat marinating time is shorter, and the meat is cooked before being layered with the rice and cooked in a dough-sealed vessel. In Pakki Yakhni (with cooked gravy), the ingredients are already cooked before baking

70 Ways to Increase Your Brain Power

By Steve GillmanExcerpt from A Book of Secrets

You Want More Brainpower - Not Higher IQ Scores!Okay, maybe you want higher IQ scores too. The American Heritage Dictionary defines Intelligence Quotient as "The ratio of tested mental age to chronological age, usually expressed as a quotient multiplied by 100."Basically, it's a test of intelligence, with 100 as the average score. There are some problems with IQ tests however.A recent IQ test asked which of four fruits was different. It was the one with more than one seed; but what if you were not familiar with these fruits? Obviously this test is culturally biased. You are assumed to have certain knowledge, yet you are being tested for intelligence, not knowledge. Now look at these letters: "ANLDEGN." Rearrange them and you'll have the name of a(n): Ocean, Country, State, City or Animal. This is from an IQ test I took. Hmm... There are very few oceans, so I could eliminate those - but wait a second! That's a test taking technique. An intelligence test shouldn't be testing your test-taking ability. I'm bound to score higher than a person of equal intelligence who hasn't learned simple techniques for scoring higher on multiple - choice tests.Real Life Results Versus ScoresNow let me ask you a question. What was Henry Fords IQ? Who cares! The man was one of the most innovative people of the last century, and he did what he did by surrounding himself with intelligent people. That practice alone has to be worth more than 20 IQ points in terms of real life results.Real life results are what you want, right? So if you want to be more creative, learn to use creative problem solving techniques. If you want to concentrate better, there are techniques for that. Learn to speed-read and you'll have double the knowledge in the same time. After you paint your first Mona Lisa, build your first skyscraper or make your first million, what will your IQ score be? Who cares!?Okay, an imperfect test is better than no test at all, and it is entertaining. I just took an IQ test, and although I don't think my IQ is really the 138 it showed, it was fun. If you really want to, you can try a free IQ test on my website http://www.IncreaseBrainPower.com. Of course you'll score higher on a good day than a bad day, so try these tips to make it a good IQ test day:70 Ways to Better Brainpower - (In no particular order.)1. Breath deep. More air in means more oxygen in the blood and therefore in the brain. Breath through your nose and you'll notice that you use your diaphragm more, drawing air deeper into your lungs. Several deep breaths can also help to relax you, which is conducive to clearer thinking.

2. Meditate. A simple meditation you can do right now is just closing your eyes and paying attention to your breath. Tensing up your muscles and then relaxing them to start may help. When your mind wanders, just bring your attention back to your breath. Five or ten minutes of this will usually relax you, clear your mind, and leave you more ready for any mental task.
3. Sit up straight. Posture affects your thinking process. Prove it to yourself by doing math in your head while slouching, looking at the floor and letting your mouth hang open. Then do the mental math while sitting up straight, keeping your mouth closed and looking forward or slightly upwards. You'll notice that it's easier to think with the latter posture.

4. Phosphotidyl Serine (PS). This supplement has been shown in clinical studies to increase lucidity and rate of learning. It activates cell-to-cell communication, helps regulate cell growth, improves the functioning of the special receptors found on cells, and prepares cells for activity. In other words, it can help your brain power. It's also thought to reverse memory decline. Phosphatidylserine has no known adverse side effects.

5.Vinpocetine. This extract, derived from an alkaloid found in the Periwinkle plant, is used as a cerebral vasodilator. It increases blood flow to the brain, which improves its oxygenation and thereby increases mental alertness and acuity. Research suggests it may also be the most powerful memory enhancer available to date.

6. Gingko Biloba. The leaves of this tree have been proven to increase blood flow to the brain. The trees are often planted in parks. My friends and I used to eat a few leaves when we wanted a brain boost. It is also inexpensive, if you buy the capsules or tea at any health food store.

7. Saint John's Wort. This is a common weed that may be growing in your yard. Although it's brain enhancing qualities are less documented (studies do show it's usefulness for treating long-term depression), many people swear by it's temporary mood-elevating effect, and our brains tend to function better when we are happy. It is inexpensive, but I used to just collect it in the yard and make tea of it. (Hyperacum Perforatum, if you want to look it up by it's botanical name.)

8. Good thinking habits. Just use a problem solving technique for several weeks and it will become a habit. Redesign everything you see for a while, and that will become a habit. You can develop many good thinking habits with some effort, and then be more resourceful effortlessly from that point on. Use the power of habit.

9. Use dead time. This is time that is otherwise wasted or just under-utilized. Driving time, time spent in waiting rooms, or even time spent raking your yard can be included in this. With a tape player and a trip to a public library, you can start to use this time to listen to books-on-tape. You may spend 200 hours a year in your car. What could you learn in that time?

10. Learn a language. Learning a new language has been shown to halt the age-related decline in brain function. It also introduces your mind to new concepts and new ways of looking at things (in English we are afraid, whereas in Spanish we have fear). It is one of the best brain exercises.

11. Rosemary. This common herb may have an effect on the brain when the scent is inhaled. We are waiting for the research, but some people swear that just sniffing rosemary wakes up their brain. It seems safe, so if you have rosemary in your spice rack, give it a try.

12. Mindfulness exercises. Concentration and clear thinking are more or less automatic once you remove distractions. Learn to stop and watch your busy mind. As you notice things that are subtly bothering you, deal with them. This might mean making a phone call you need to make, or putting things on a list so you can forget them for now. With practice, this becomes easier, and your thinking becomes more powerful.

. Write. Writing is good for your mind in a number of ways. It is a way to tell your memory what is important, so you'll recall things more easily in the future. It is a way to clarify your thinking. It is a way to exercise your creativity and analytical ability. Diaries, idea-journals, poetry, note-taking and story-writing are all ways to use writing to boost your brain power.

14. Listen to Mozart. In a study at the University of California, researchers found that children who studied piano and sang daily in chorus, were much better at solving puzzles, and when tested, scored 80% higher in spatial intelligence than the non-musical group. In another study, 36 students were given three spatial reasoning tests on a standard IQ test. Just before the first test, they listened to Mozart's sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K. 448 for ten minutes. Before the second test, they listened to a relaxation tape. Before the third, they sat in silence. The average scores for all 36 students: 1st test: 119. 2nd test: 111. 3rd test: 110. A nine-point boost from Mozart!

15. Develop your intuition. Intuition can be an important part of brainpower. Einstein and others have relied heavily on their intuitive hunches. See Chapter 25 for tips on how to develop your intuition.

16. Avoid foods that cause subtle allergies. These can include wheat, corn, peanuts and dairy products. Watch yourself to see if you have a problem with any of these. They cause digestive problems and brain fog in some people.

17. Sleep better. As long as you get a certain amount of sleep - probably a minimum of five hours - the quality seems to be more important than the quantity. Also, short naps in the afternoon seem to work well to recharge the brain for some people.
The Secrets of Powerful SleepSleep LESS and have MORE energy by optimizing your sleep patterns in order to create an abundance of energy in your life. Learn more here...

18. Caffeine. The research shows higher test scores for students who drink coffee before major exams. My chess game gets better. In other studies, it has been shown that too much caffeine leads to poorer quality decisions. Caffeine affects individuals differently, and has some nasty long-term side effects for some of us, but short-term - it works!

19. Avoid sugar. Any simple carbohydrates can give you "brain fog." Sometimes called the "sugar blues" as well, this sluggish feeling makes it hard to think clearly. It results from the insulin rushing into the bloodstream to counteract the sugar rush. Avoid pasta, sugars, white bread and potato chips before any important mental tasks.

20. Hypnosis audios. The power of suggestion is real, and one way to use it is with hypnosis tapes, CD's or downloads. This type of brain "programing" has more evidence for it than subliminals.

21. Speed reading. Contrary to what many believe, your comprehension of material often goes up when you learn to speed-read. You get to learn a lot more in less time, and it is definitely a good brain exercise.

22. Exercise. Long term exercise can boost brainpower, which isn't surprising. Anything that affects physical health in a positive way probably helps the brain too. Recent research, though, shows that cognitive function is improved immediately after just ten minutes of aerobic exercise. If you need a brain recharge, you might want to walk up and down the stairs a few times.

23. Imaginary friends. Talking to and getting advice from characters in your mind can be a great way to access the information in your subconscious mind. Imagine a conversation with a person who has a lot of knowledge in the area you want advice in.

24. Develop your creativity. Creativity gives power to your thinking. Raw computation can be done by computers now, but humans provide the creative thought that shapes our world. See Chapter 24 for tips on developing your creativity.

25. Learn more efficiently. When you decide to learn something, take notes from the start. Leave each "learning session" with a question or two in mind, to create anticipation and curiosity. Take short breaks, so there will be more beginnings and endings to your studies (Things learned at the beginning or ending of a class or session are remembered better).

26. Use techniques for clear thinking. Cluttered rooms and offices can contribute to cluttered thinking. Organize a space for mental work. Sigh, stretch, and take a deep breath before you start on a tough mental job. Plan some distraction-free time for brainstorming.

27. Brain wave entrainment. The newest brain wave entrainment products are powerful tools for altering your brain function. Some will almost immediately relax you, while others will put your brain waves in a pattern that is most conducive to analytical thinking.
Free 15-minute Brainwave Entrainment AudioCalm your mind, reduce your stress and boost your creativity automatically with this free MP3. Learn more here...

28. Creatine. This is a compound found in meat, used by athletes to help build muscle. Now the evidence is here to show that it helps your brain as well. Proceedings B , a journal published by the Royal Society reports that the research showed improvement in working memory and general intelligence resulting from creatine supplementation. The dose used in the study was 5 grams per day. This is about the level used to boost sports performance, and is as much as you'd normally get in four pounds of meat, according to lead researcher Dr. Caroline Rae.

29. Talk. Talking is only good for the brain if you are actually exercising it, of course. Try explaining something that you don't understand very well to a friend, though, and you'll notice that the process of explaining will help you clarify your understanding.

30. Do something you enjoy. This is a way to both lower stress and rev up your brain. The key is to do something active. Watching TV doesn't count. Whether it is playing Scrabble or building birdhouses, when you are actively engaged in an activity that you enjoy, you worry less about things and you start to think better.

31. Adjust your beliefs. Believe you are smarter, and you'll become smarter. For this, affirmations may work, but even better is evidence. Make a note of your successes. Tell yourself, "Hey, that was really creative," when you do something creative. When you have a good idea, make a note of it. Gather the evidence for your own intelligence and you'll start to experience more of it.

32. Brain exercises. Do math in your mind while driving. Think of a new use for everything you see. Regular use of the brain has been shown to generate new neuronal growth, and even halt the decline of mental function that often comes with age.

33. Learn new things. This is another way to exercise the brain. It can also be done with little time investment if you use books-on-tapes while driving.

34. Walk. Exercise has been shown to benefit the brain, and walking is one of the best exercises for many. It is low impact, and the rhythmic nature of it seems to put you in a state that is very conducive to clear thinking. In fact, carry a tape recorder with you to take notes, and a twenty minute walk can be a great way to solve problems.

35. Model others. Find others that are creative, intelligent, or very productive. Do what they do, and think what they think. This is a key principle of neuro-linguistic programming. Be careful about taking their advice, though. Successful people often don't really understand why they are successful. Do what they do, not what they say.

36. Eat fish. Eating fish actually speeds up brain waves, and improves concentration. Researchers have also found an almost perfect correlation between intake of fish and lowered levels of depression in the various countries of the world. The U.S. has 24 times the incidence of depression as Japan, for example, where fish intake is much higher.

37. Avoid unnecessary arguments. When you defend a position too vigorously, especially when it is just to "win" the argument, you invest our ego into it. This is not conducive to the easy acceptance and use of new information. In other words, you put your mind in a rut, and you dig it deeper with each argument. Debate can be a valuable thing, but when the ego takes over, the mind closes a little. This is not a recipe for better thinking.

38. Laugh. The release of endorphins caused by laughter lowers stress levels, which is good for long term brain health. Laughter also tends to leave you more open to new ideas and thoughts.

39. Play. Stimulating the brain causes measurable changes in the structure of the brain. New connections are made and new brain cells are grown. Intellectual play, as well as any playing that involves hand-eye coordination stimulates the brain.

40. Do puzzles. Crossword puzzles, lateral thinking puzzles, and even good riddles are a great way to get brain exercise. You can work on them while waiting for a dentist appointment, or on the bus, if you are short on time.

41. Sing. When you are alone in your car, try singing about something you are working on. This taps into and exercises your right brain. Have you ever noticed how it is easier to rhyme when you sing than when you just speak or write? This is because the right brain is better at pattern recognition. By doing this brain exercise regularly you can train yourself to tap into the power of the right brain. This will make you a more effective problem-solver. If you doubt the distinction between the hemispheres of the brain, look at how stutterers can stop stuttering as soon as they start singing. Try it.

42. Nuts. University students in Brazil and other South American countries often eat several Brazil nuts before an exam, believing they are good for their mental power. The evidence is starting to confirm this. Other nuts that have minerals and amino acids that are beneficial to the brain include almonds and walnuts

.43. Olive oil. High in mono-unsaturated fat, olive oil has been shown to improve memory. A cheaper alternative is canola oil, but this hasn't been studied much yet.

44. Vitamin supplements. In studies, children scored higher on tests when on a regimen of daily vitamin supplements. "Experts" will tell you that if you eat a balanced diet, you don't need supplements, which, given the culture here, is really just a sales pitch for vitamins, isn't it? Who eats a perfectly balanced diet?

45. Fiber. It isn't just what goes in, but what comes out that is important to brain function. Toxic build-up in the body and brain can cause "brain fog." People often report clearer thinking as one of the benefits of curing their constipation.

46. Self awareness. This may not seem important to brain power, but it is. When you know yourself better, you can avoid the usual effects of ego and emotion in your seemingly "rational" thinking. Or you can at least take it into account. Watch yourself, especially as you explain things or argue.

47. Motivate yourself. Motivation is as important to mental tasks as it is to any other. Learn a few simple techniques for self motivation. You can start with those in Chapter 8.

48. Avoid too much stress. Neuropsychiastrist Richard Restak, M.D., form the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Services, sums up the research thus: "Stress causes brain damage." Long term stress has repeated been shown to hurt the brain, not to mention the rest of the body. Learn a few stress reduction techniques if you get stressed out often.

49. Get educated. Scientists have known for a while that the less educated get alzheimer's more frequently. Education in any area seems to make the brain stronger.

50. Avoid too much fat. In laboratory studies, animals consistently learn slower when they are on a diet high in fat. Type of fat may make a difference, so you may want to stick to using olive oil and other non-saturated fats. Saturated fats have been shown to actually stunt the growth of brain cells.

51. Eat less. Overeating has the immediate effect of redirecting more blood to the digestive process, leaving less for the brain. Long term, it can cause arterial obstructions that reduce blood flow to the brain permanently. In at least one study, rats on a restricted-calorie diet had more brainpower.

52. Avoid suspect foods. There is evidence that the following foods can be bad for your brain: Artificial food colorings, artificial sweeteners, colas, corn syrup, frostings, high-sugar drinks, hydrogenated fats, sugars, white bread, and any white-flour products.

53. Eat breakfast. When kids who didn't eat breakfast started to eat it, researchers found that their math scores went up a whole grade on average.

54. Avoid diabetes. The development of diabetes coincides with a dropping of IQ scores. In other words, if you want to maintain your brain power, follow your doctors dietary recommendations for preventing or treating diabetes.

55. Eat foods high in antioxidants. Antioxidants protect all your cells, including brain cells. Some of the foods highest in antioxidants include: prunes, raisins, blueberries, blackberries, garlic, kale, cranberries, strawberries, spinach, and raspberries. In one test, rats had age-related mental decline reversed by eating the equivalent of a 1/2 cup of blueberries per day.

56. Drink wine. In moderation, red wine can be good for the brain, it seems. It is rich in antioxidants, which protect brain cells. One glass per day for women and two for men is usually considered a safe and moderate amount.

57. Use alcohol in moderation. In a study at the University of Indiana School of Medicine, elderly light drinkers (fewer than 4 drinks per week) scored higher on tests of thinking abilities than non-drinkers. Those who drank 10 or more drinks per week scored lower. It is known that alcohol can kill brain cells, so moderation seems to be the key.

58. Folic acid. According to one study, 200 micrograms of folic acid, the amount found in 3/4 cup of cooked spinach, alleviates depression and reverses memory loss.

59. Potential brain foods. Other foods that may be good for your brain include: Avocados, bananas, lean beef, brewer's yeast. broccoli, brown rice, brussel sprouts, cantaloupe, cheese, chicken, collard greens, eggs, flaxseed oil, legumes, oatmeal, oranges, peanut butter, peas, potatoes, romaine lettuce, salmon, soybeans, spinach, tuna, turkey, wheat germ, and yogurt.

60. Vitamin E. Jean Carper, in researching her book, "Your Miracle Brain," found that many brain researchers are taking 400 I.U.s of vitamin E daily. It is an antioxidant, and reduces the clogging of blood vessels, including those going in the brain.

61. Vitamin C. Taken in the form of orange juice in a study at the Texas Women's University, vitamin C increased the IQ scores of children.

62. Selenium. 100 micrograms of selenium has been shown to be a mood-elevator. Your brain almost certainly functions better when you are in a better mood. Foods rich in selenium include Brazil nuts and garlic.

63. Alpha-lipoic acid. Alpha-lipoic acid (10 to 50 milligrams daily) improves memory and protects nerve cells.

64. Inositol. This is a safe and natural substance that is often grouped with the B-vitamins. It reduces stress and promotes clear thinking. It contributes to energy production, and so can "wake you up." Animal studies show a measurable increase in physical activity for up to five hours after taking it.

65. Huperzine A. This is a compound extracted from the Chinese club moss. Researchers both in Israel and the U.S. have used it to treat alzheimer's. It improves memory and learning an seems to be very safe.

66. Ask questions. This is a great way to keep your brain in shape. Just get in the habit of asking questions often, even if it is only in your own mind. Why are taller buildings better? what is the purpose of curbs? Ask anything that comes to mind, and ponder the possible answers.

67. Sniff basil. This another of the herbs that may be good for your brain. No studies yet, but many report a brain boost from smelling basil.

68. Temperature. Many people have noted that they think better at certain temperatures. In general, it seems that being slightly cool, but not uncomfortable, is most conducive to good thinking. Try experimenting on yourself to see what temperature works best for you.

69. Use systems. From the time I was ten years old, 12 x 49 was always (12 x 50) - 12. It's easier to figure in your head this way (588, by the way). I didn't get any credit for my personal algorithms then, but they are selling these shortcuts on late-night TV now, because they work. You can find your own easier ways to do mental math or other mental tasks, or read a good book on them.

70. Make a brainpower plan. It takes about twenty to thirty days of repetition to establish new habits, many psychologists will tell you. This means that when you create your plan for better brainpower, be sure you plan to use that new problem solving technique, or eat those new brain foods for at least three weeks. Plants and Feng Shui

The power of plants and flowers in your home
Plants are auspicious from the point of feng shui. It is always good to grow plants in the house, especially wooded plants.
Plants in the office also bring about increased luck in your career. Place plants in the east, south or south-east corners of your office for maximum luck.
If you are a married couple and want children, avoid putting flowers in the bedroom. Instead, place a basket of fruits in your bedroom. Fruits, especially pomegranates, are a symbol of fertility.
Don't place thorny plants inside your home. Thorny plants do form a protective shield, and could be placed outside the home. Don't place them too near the front door. They could be placed a little further away from the door, or in the balcony.
Don't place bonsai plants inside or outside the home. They represent stunted growth.
Trim your plants regularly. Overgrown plants promote bad energy. Similarly, trim trees in your garden regularly. Don't let them overwhelm your house.
Fresh flowers bring luck and fortune in your home. Place fresh flowers in your living room on a regular basis. However, once they die, throw them out. Don't leave dying flowers in your home.
Avoid placing dried flowers in your house. They are believed to bring misfortune. Artificial flowers are a far preferable option and are believed to bring luck.
Do not place any flowers, plants or any other auspicious feng shui symbol in the bathroom. The good luck will backfire and turn into bad luck.
Ever noticed lemons (nimbus) hanging on the entrances of shops? They are believed to ward off the evil eye, according to Hindu superstitious beliefs. Similarly, oranges and lemons are believed to be powerful symbols of fortune, and bring prosperity to the home. They should be placed at the entrance.
General tips for enhancing prosperity
Before we continue, it is essential to get one thing clear. There is no substitute for hard work. "Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration." Few people have come across wealth and prosperity without putting in hard work. However, often even the most hardworking people may feel that no matter how much they struggle, they seem to be going nowhere, because of sheer bad luck. These are just a few tips to encourage lady luck to smile in your direction.
The three-legged frog is considered to be a strong symbol of prosperity. Keep it anywhere in your living room.
In your office, sit with your back to the wall or a closed cabinet Avoid sitting with your back to the window or an open bookshelf or you may become the victim of malice and betrayal.
Place a painting or image of a mountain range on the wall behind you.
Never sit with your back to the door.
Flowing water is always considered auspicious. If you have a fountain in your reception area, ensure that the water is flowing inwards, and not in the outward direction - or money will flow out instead of flowing in.
If you live close to a swift river, prosperity just gets swept along with the current. It is best to live close to a meandering stream.

Attitude in Life

The attitudes that you choose to carry in life have a major impact on such important consequences as how happy you are, or whether realize your goals. For example, if you choose to persist in life, you will likely one day reach your goal. However, if your attitude is to give up after initial attempts, your path to your goal may be more likely thwarted. Thus, the following advice tries to summarize some of the major attitudes that people should generally try to hold, but are generally neglected by many people. It may not be possible to follow these guidelines all the time, but definitely attitudes to strive to achieve toward.
Don't blame others—learn from your mistakes and any other lessons that your experiences may be handing out to you. Many people have excuses about their lives. They don't do this because of this. They didn't do that because of that. They blame their parents. They blame their teachers. They blame the traffic if they are late. They blame everything and everyone they can—except themselves, of course.
However, they should really be looking at that excuse, and saying, "Hey, I do not need to make up an excuse. I do not need to be late going to this appointment every time. I can solve this problem of being late. I can be on time by writing down in my agenda that I will set my alarm the night before, get up on time with time to spare, and arrive on time, as I had told others." Others may even be astonished at their transformation.
Don't criticize other people or things just for the sake of criticizing. It is a waste of time. If you can change a situation, change it; if you can't, don't complain. Of course, you may want to discuss with a friend the problem you are having. Doing that is perfectly legitimate because it makes you feel better after sharing a problem with someone. Once you have discussed this problem, though, try to move on to more constructive problem solving instead of complaining and criticizing in front of everyone how horrible the boss is, or how you hate the traffic layout in the city. Do something about it instead of complaining. If it serves no purpose, do not complain. Even if it does serve a purpose, such as if you do not like someone playing loud music, you should frankly address the problem with that person instead of complaining. (See the Communication section.)
Some people constantly complain about certain individuals to others. However, this does nothing to solve any problems unless, as mentioned above, you would like this confidant to help you with your problems. Still other people find faults in the most trivial of things. Again, this is an extremely bad habit that must be broken. (See article on changing your own habits—Effecting Internal Change).
Work hard. Perhaps the reason that so many people watch professional sports is that when a team wins, it makes them feel wonderful. During the period of the playing however, the viewer was passive and did not really have to engage in much work or sweat. Thus, it was not hard work. It was easy work, but yet it made them feel so happy if their team wins. However, if you are willing to accomplish hard work, and not easy work, for your own benefit as well as for the benefit of society, all will improve for both yourself and society.
While you work hard, remember to aim for high quality, not perfection. Perfection may be almost impossible. However, performing high quality work, doing the best you can, pushing yourself beyond what you normally assume to be the best, is attainable for everyone. If you enjoy calligraphy, challenge yourself to write even better every time. Put in some more toil. Put in some more time. Slowly, your skills will gradually improve. Your toil and sweat will eventually pay off. Not all of a sudden of course, but through days, months, and years of hard work, you will one day notice, "Wow, I really like that penmanship of mine." And it was not because you tried to perfect your penmanship, but because you tried to make it the very best you possibly could.

Universe's biggest star discovered

Thu, Jul 22 03:54 PM
London, July 22 (IANS) The biggest star, with a mass 320 times greater than the sun's, has been discovered at the edge of our galaxy by British astronomers.
Scientists at the University of Sheffield found the stellar giant - named R136a1 - using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile and data from the Hubble Space Telescope.
The star is located in the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small 'satellite' galaxy which orbits the Milky Way, the Telegraph reported.
Previously, the heaviest known stars were around 150 times the mass of the sun, and this was believed to be close to the cosmic size limit

As stars get more massive, the amount of energy created in their cores grows at a faster rate than the force of gravity which holds them together.
The torrents of energy produced eventually become so powerful that the stars are torn apart, says the latest issue of Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
This is known as the 'Eddington Limit', after the British physicist Arthur Eddington who, in 1919, proved Einstein's theory of relativity by showing that light is bent by gravity.
It was believed that the Eddington Limit was reached at around 150 solar masses.
However, R136a1 has been measured at 265 solar masses. Since heavy stars rapidly lose mass as they grow older by converting it into energy, R136a1 has already lost 20 percent of its mass in its short million-year life. It is believed originally to have been a colossal 320 solar masses.
The sun, by comparison, has been burning for 4.57 billion years, and has converted only 0.03 percent of its mass into energy.
The chief researcher and professor in the Sheffield team, Paul Crowther, told 'Astronomy Now': 'Because of their proximity to the Eddington Limit they lose mass at a pretty high rate.'
This means that they are incredibly bright and hot - R136a1 is believed to have a surface temperature of more than 40,000 degrees Celsius, and is 10 million times brighter than the sun.
Among the largest known stars previously known were the Pistol Star, between 80 and 150 solar masses, and Eta Carinae, around 100 solar masses.
The Pistol Star radiates as much energy in 20 seconds as our sun does in a year. However, both are utterly dwarfed by the vast new discovery.
According to 'Astronomy Now,' R136a1 gives off more energy than all the stars in the Orion Nebula, and if it were in our solar system it would be as much brighter than the sun as the sun is than the moon.
Crowther suspects that this is about as big as stars can get. 'Owing to the rarity of these monsters, I think it is unlikely that this new record will be broken any time soon,' he says.

Top 10 Superfoods for Winter

When did we become so hungry for health-miracles and super-cures? Has it always been like this–or is it a more recent desire borne from the fear of ill-health caused by the modern world? All I know is that when I consider the struggle our bodies are up against–air and water pollution, synthetic and processed foods, chemical toxins–I find myself clinging to every last study, report and trend that promotes beneficial health claims!
Which brings me to superfoods. Super foods. What a brilliant concept, and how well it plays into the current health zeitgeist: Simple, healthy foods teeming with antioxidants that patrol our bodies and smack down those villainous free radicals, thus taming cell destruction. My heroes! It makes one want to eat nothing but goji berries and pomegranate juice–take that free radicals!
Many say that the antioxidant action provided by superfoods protects against cancer and heart disease, among a host of other ills–while others point out that few carefully controlled studies have been conducted. All I know is that eating food that has a high ORAC value (the rating system for antioxidants) feels deeply, instinctively right to me. Maybe I have been brainwashed by the hype, but at the very least, I know that eating a wide variety of pure, whole food is a very good thing. The very best thing, in fact. At the very least, it certainly can’t hurt.
I also know that it’s important for the sake of sustainability to eat as locally as possible, which makes eating many of the fresh superfood fruit and vegetables for those of us in colder climes more of a challenge. But this opens the door to preserved foods and winter produce. These are the unsung superstars–the dried, frozen, cold-stored and cruciferous crew–they may not glam up like their bright and shiny summer cousins, but they are clearly the humble heroes here. With that in mind, I went over the USDA list of foods with the highest antioxidant levels and sifted out the ones that work well in the winter months. (The report goes by the catchy title: Lipophilic and Hydrophilic Antioxidant Capacities of Common Foods in the United States–those USDA scientists are just a barrel of monkeys.)
Here are the contenders for the top winter superfoods, all of these scored within the top 20 antioxidant-containing foods according to the USDA:
CinnamonCinnamon has one of the highest antioxidant levels on the list, and has an added bonus in that it may help you better regulate your blood-glucose levels. Although I realize that cinnamon’s not exactly a “local” product for those of us not in Indonesia, it doesn’t seem like the worst offender in terms of carbon footprint–one little stick goes a long way. See Cinnamon’s Secret Health Benefit for more on cinnamon.
PecansPeople always lament that the tasty things are the worst things for our health–case in point: French fries. But how about pecans? Yum! Pecans have shown to significantly lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL. Frequent consumption of nuts is associated with a lowered risk of sudden cardiac death and other coronary heart disease, as well as a lower risk of Type II diabetes in women. A handful of pecans can brighten a meal, but make Vegan Pumpkin Pecan Pie for full-on swooning.
Dark ChocolateA Penn State-led review of the available evidence from 66 published studies, supports the view that consuming flavonoid-rich chocolate, in moderation, can be associated with reduced risk for cardiovascular disease. Chocolate that is minimally processed and has the highest cocoa content (which means the darkest chocolate) has the highest level of flavonoids. With dark chocolate, even eating as little as 30 calories per day can have a moderate effect. (But more can make you really happy.) For more about chocolate, including information about Fair Trade Certification and some fabulous recipes, see: Easy Greening Chocolate.
Pomegranate JuicePomegranates offer very high antioxidant activity–and research shows that drinking pomegranate juice may help with lowering the risk for hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis. I find eating pomegranate fruit one of life’s simple pleasures, but for a daily dose, pomegranate juice is more accessible. To read more about pomegranates and see recipes, see Prime Time for Pomegranates.
Red Delicious ApplesIn addition to high anti-oxidant levels, apples have a huge array of excellent health benefits. Although I’m crazy about heirloom varieties that I can get locally, Red Delicious apples scored the highest for anti-oxidant levels on the USDA list; but I’m sure the USDA didn’t tackle a huge variety of apples for testing. I wonder how my local Esopus Spitzenberg or Hudson’s Golden Gem varieties would have scored? Along with the high antioxidant magic from apples, they are also rich in pectin, a form of soluble fiber known to help lower cholesterol. Read Apples for Your Heart? for more about the healthy benefits of apples.
Frozen BlueberriesBlueberries are the rock stars of high-antioxidant fruit and vegetable family–they have a super high ORAC level, are widely available, and easy to eat. Even though freezing can degrade some of the nutrients, frozen blueberries are available year-round and don’t spoil. Frozen blueberries work well plain, on cereal, in smoothies–and incorporate nicely into baked goods like Blueberry Coffee Cake.
PrunesI know they generally go by the more rustically-glamorous, marketing-friendly name of dried plums these days, but I say, call a prune a prune. Prunes are very high in anti-oxidants, and are a good source of energy in the form of simple sugars, yet they do not cause a rapid rise in blood sugar concentration, possibly because of high fiber, fructose, and sorbitol content. Additionally, the high potassium content of prunes might be beneficial for cardiovascular health. Plums are an important source of boron, which is thought to play a role in prevention of osteoporosis. Pureed prunes make a miraculous substitute for fat in baked goods: Try Guilt-Free Golden Door Chocolate Chip Cookies and a vegan recipe for Peaceful Poppyseed Prune Bread.
Red or Kidney Dried BeansAn excellent source of protein, antioxidants, folic acid, potassium, dietary fiber and complex carbohydrates, beans are flavorful, nutritionally dense, inexpensive and versatile. Read about heirloom varieties and cooking tips in Cool Beans.
Russet PotatoesPotatoes got a bad reputation in modern nutrition lore, most likely because of their high starch content–but potatoes are awesome. They contain no fat or cholesterol, have 3 grams of protein per medium potato, 2 grams of fiber (with skin on), which may aid in weight loss, lower blood cholesterol levels and decrease risk of heart disease. They have 45% Daily Value (DV) of vitamin C and 18% DV of potassium. Russet potatoes are specifically high on the list, but as is the case with apples, I’m sure a limited variety of potatoes were tested by the USDA. I imagine that the deep-hued varieties have even more anti-oxidants, like the Adirondack Red or Peruvian Purple. Read about cool potato varieties and recipes.
CabbageA New York Times article in December suggests that cabbage is the most important [vegetable] in the world from the point of view of nutritional benefits and cancer-fighting ability. Cabbage possesses phytochemicals including sulforaphane, which studies suggest protects the body against cancer-causing free radicals, and indoles, which help metabolize estrogens. It’s also an excellent source of vitamins K and C, and a very good source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6, folate, manganese and Omega 3 fatty acids. Slaw is the obvious application for cabbage–this recipe is cumin-spiced which makes it winter-palate friendly: Moroccon Carrot and Cabbage Salad, while this French recipe for Moulin Rouge Cabbage is a great alternative to the basic braised version.

Most Popular Christmas Toys - Tonka Toy Trucks

One of the most popular Christmas toys every year is the yellow Tonka Toughs Classic Dump Truck. When I was kid, I had a big yellow Tonka dump truck. That truck saw a lot of mileage. It hauled a lot of dirt, rocks, sticks and sand. It got frequent washings when it was left out in the rain. It often got buried in the sandbox. As I recall, it was also involved in numerous tragic accidents with flights of stairs, other Tonka Trucks and the occasional firecracker. It was one tough truck. So tough, that when I finally and sadly outgrew the toy truck scene, my big yellow Tonka dump truck was still there in one piece, despite the best efforts of myself and my friends. I'm here to tell you that there was no "planned obsolescence" in a Tonka truck then and there still isn't today. Tonka trucks are still as strong and as tough as they ever were. Some of the best Tonka trucks out there today are the Tonka Toughest Mighty Truck, the Tonka Toughest Mighty Loader, the Tonka Toughs Bulldozer and the Tonka Toughest Mighty Crane. All are as strong, tough and fun as anything Tonka has ever made. A lot of other "classic" toys have compromised their integrity by using cheaper manufacturing materials, not Tonka. The quality of the construction in the Tonka Toughest Mighty Truck is very evident. The wheels and cab of the this Tonka Truck are made of a tough, heavy-duty grade plastic that is impervious to cracking and bending. The bed of truck is made of solid steel, just like it was when I was kid. This means it can haul a whole lot of whatever needs to be hauled, be it rocks, stone, sand or the family cat. Plus there's a handle on the front of the bed that makes dumping the kitty out that much easier.Like all Tonka Trucks, the Tonka Toughest Might Truck is one huge piece of machinery. This big boy is a full 18 inches long and stands nearly 12 inches tall. It also comes with 6-1/2-inch tall tires. That big size and those big tires mean that this truck can get out of any "dangerous" situation that may arise, even the occasional sandbox burial. In addition, the Tonka Toughest Mighty Truck comes with a lifetime warranty, so you're covered should you run into a particularly big flight of stairs or firecracker. This holiday season get your kids one of the most popular christmas toys that really is still a classic - the Tonka Toughest Mighty Truck.

A good plan has everything measured so you won't have to assume the length of anything – a useful feature especially for beginners.Materials. Read through the materials required by the plan. Some of them may not be available in your area or may be too expensive so check first if you can substitute other materials for them. Also, do some research to find out if the materials required by the plan are actually suited for its design (e.g. whether a certain kind of wood is suitable to be used as a desk’s base) and if they are a good match for your needs (e.g. if you need to build a shelf that will be placed in a humid area, you should use wood that’s isn't susceptible to mold growth).Complexity. Even simple-looking woodwork may require a certain level of skill to finish. Examine the plan and decide whether you are capable of handling it given your skills. Look for added features on website that could probably scale-down a highly complex plan to a simple one for beginners. If you really want to pursue a plan you saw on the internet that requires advanced techniques, you can have it modified and simplified by a professional craftsman in your area.

10-Minute Exercises With Big Results

Many busy professionals feel that working out isn’t worth the time unless they can exercise for forty minutes or longer and it’s true that many healthcare workers and government agencies used to recommend that all adults get thirty consecutive minutes of aerobic exercise per day. But this is the twenty-first century and the fact of the matter is that you don’t have to do all your exercise at once to reap the health benefits. Research has shown that short, intense exercise segments throughout the day are just as effective as longer workouts at burning calories, increasing cardio endurance and lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. Even as little as five minutes can go a long way towards balancing hormones in the body and making you a happier person – is that great or what? You no longer have to worry about finding a large block of free time to work out; just take a coffee break and in five minutes you can feel totally rejuvenated. One of the greatest things about shorter workouts is that they have tremendous potential to reshape your body with a minimum time commitment. Incorporating strength training exercises into your daily schedule is a powerful tool for both heart health and muscle strength. Spend five minutes doing lower body exercises and after several weeks you can tell a difference. Spend ten minutes on a power workout and results will show up in three weeks or less. Use the following ten-minute express workouts on a regular basis for a month and you will see remarkable changes in your body’s strength. You can do these workouts in your office with the door closed or, if your office is a cubicle, in the restroom or some other private area. Do whatever is necessary for you to fit in your exercise time at work. Express Workout 1: Hips and ThighsHips and thighs can be a frustrating area to shape up especially for women. Thanks to the physiological design of female bodies, fat tends to be stored in the thighs and hips and can be very resistant to toning efforts. Perform this routine three to four times weekly in conjunction with aerobic exercise and your body will begin to reshape in six to ten weeks. Squats: Squats are performed by standing with feet about shoulder-width apart and arms by sides. Keep strong posture and slowly lower buttocks as though about to sit down in a chair. Lower several inches and then slowly raise. Pliès: Adopted from ballet, pliès are performed by standing with feet just wider than shoulder-width and toes pointed outward. With a hand on a chair or wall for balance, slowly drop body straight down for several inches and then come back up. To increase intensity, on the final pliè, stay in a lowered position and slowly pulse your body up and down about an inch. This fatigues the muscle faster. Lunges: Lunges are performed by standing with feet about shoulder-width apart and hands on hips. Stand tall and take a large step forward with one foot, and remain in that position. Turn your back foot up until balanced on the toes and then slowly lower your body until your front knee forms a right angle. Slowly raise your body back up. Repeat on each side. Leg Stretches: Stand with feet about shoulder-width apart and one hand holding a chair or wall for balance. Raise one foot behind you and reach back with your hand, grab the foot and gently pull it towards your buttocks. This stretches the quadriceps muscle on the front of the leg. Repeat with each leg. For stretching the calf muscle, place one foot slightly in front of you and point your toes up, balancing on the heel. Keep your weight on the foot that is not being stretched. Repeat on both sides. All times are approximate. 0:01 – 1:00 – Begin by walking briskly in place to warm up the muscles. Warming the muscles makes them pliable and will allow you to work longer. 1:01 – 3:00 – Perform as many squats as possible in two minutes.3:01 – 4:00 – Rest for one minute.4:01 – 6:00 – Perform as many pliès as possible in two minutes.6:01 – 7:00 – Rest for one minute.7:01 – 9:00 – Perform as many lunges (both legs) as possible in two minutes.9:01 – 10:00 – Recovery and stretching. Express Workout 2 – Arms and ShouldersBuilding strength in your upper body is a vital part of any workout plan and fortunately it can be a fairly easy area to strengthen. Powerful arms are important for both men and women to assist with everyday life – it’s surprising how many typical daily tasks require using the shoulders, back and arms. By building those muscles, you will take some of the daily stress of your body. This 10-minute express workout develops the biceps, triceps, upper back muscles and shoulders. Bicep Curls: Curls are done by standing with your feet about shoulder-width apart and weights in both hands. Tuck your elbows firmly against your sides with palms facing forward. Slowly raise the weight almost to your shoulder for a count of 5 and then lower it, again for a count of 5. Overhead Press: The overhead press is performed by standing with feet about shoulder-width apart and a straight back, holding a weight in each hand. Bring the hands up to the shoulders and then slowly lift up for a count of 5. Raise the weights until the arm is almost fully extended; then release and lower downward. Triceps Raise: Stand tall with feet slightly more than shoulder-width. With weights in hands, lift straight overhead until almost fully extended. Turn palms inward to face each other. Slowly begin to lower the weight down toward your back until the elbow forms a right angle; then raise the weight. Forward Press: Standing with feet a few inches past shoulder-width. With weights in hands, bring up to shoulders. Slowly press the weights forward; then pull back. Be sure to keep arms level with shoulders and move forward and back slowly. Stretches: Stretch the arms by raising your arms overhead, dropping one hand behind your head and using the other hand to gently press the elbow back to stretch the triceps muscle. Repeat with the other arm. Next, raise both arms overhead, lace fingers together and press arms outward. Lastly, bring one arm across the front of your body and use the other hand to press the arm against the body to stretch the biceps muscle. 0:01 – 0:30 – Warm up 0:31 – 2:30 – Perform as many slow, quality biceps curls as possible within two minutes.2:31 – 3:00 – Rest for thirty seconds. 3:01 – 5:00 – Begin overhead raises and complete as many quality raises as possible within two minutes. 5:01 – 5:30 – Rest for thirty seconds. 5:31 – 7:30 – Complete as many accurate triceps presses as possible within two minutes. 7:31 – 8:00 – Rest for thirty seconds. 8:01 – 10:00 – Complete as many properly done forward presses as possible within two minutes. Extra time: Stretch if you have time available. Express Workout 3 – Abdominal MusclesHaving strong core muscles is crucial to protecting the spine and maintaining good posture. When your body is supported by strong central muscles it’s easier to perform everyday tasks as well as exercise. Abdominal workouts won’t flatten the stomach – that requires aerobic exercise – but they will strengthen and tone the muscles. Basic Curls: Perform the basic curl by lying on your back with knees bents. Place your fingertips at your ears and use your stomach muscles to pull yourself about five or six inches. Slowly lower back down. Avoid using momentum to perform the exercises. Cross-Curls: Begin in basic curl position. Contract stomach muscles and lift to the right as you bring your right elbow to your left knee. Switch and bring left elbow to right knee. Bicycle: Begin in basic curl position but prop your upper body up on your elbows. Straighten your legs and then raise both legs several inches off the floor. Pull your right leg in to your body; then extend it as you pull in your left leg. Continue doing so; thus “bicycling.” Rope Climb: Begin in basic curl position. Raise your legs straight up into the air while keeping your upper body flat on the floor. Using your abdominals to lift your upper back off the floor, use your hands and arms to pretend you are climbing a rope. Grasp the “rope” with your right hand as you bring your right side off the floor; then switch and use your left hand. Stretches: Lie on your stomach with hands at about shoulder-height. Slowly use your hands to lift your upper body off the floor and stretch your abdominals. 0:01 – 2:00 – Perform as many well-done basic curls as possible within two minutes. 2:01 – 2:30 – Rest for thirty seconds.2:31 – 4:30 – Complete as many accurate cross-curls as possible within two minutes.4:31 – 5:00 – Rest for thirty seconds. 5:01 – 7:00 – “Bicycle” for two minutes. 7:01 – 7:30 – Rest for thirty seconds. 7:31 – 9:30 – “Climb” the “rope” for two minutes. 9:31 – 10:00 – Stretch the abdominal muscles.

Although you may not realize it, the average American actually consumes more protein than he actually needs. For the lacto-ovo vegetarian, dairy products are an excellent source of protein. Vegans on the other hand, get their protein from nuts, seeds, and soy products.Along the lines of beans, there are several to choose from, including green or red lentils, peanuts, split peas, pinto, soy, kidney, and many more. Some of them you are already familiar, such as kidney beans in chili, refried beans in Mexican dishes, red beans and rice, and pinto beans. Although some beans taste good as they are, others are available with different flavors to help enhance their taste. Nuts are hihg in protein, although they deliver a lot more fat than beans, which means you should enjoy them in moderation. By having one cup of cooked beans, you'll get the same amount of protein as eating two ounces of meat! The nutrients of concern for vegans, who avoid all types of animal food, are vitamin B12, calcium, and vitamin D. In the average North American diet, the primary source for B12 is animals. To have an adequate intake of B12, vegans should reguarly consume vitamin B12 supplements or foods, which contain vitamin B12, such as soy products or milk.
